Frieze Box (Live Art/Visual Art): a unique public art installation situated in Jubilee Square for two weeks. A huge box was erected each day and lined with blank canvasses, which were then painted by some of Brighton and the UK’s most exciting graffiti, stencil and street artists, along with others from the ‘subcultures’ of Hip Hop.

A number of international stars of graffiti culture were also invited to customise the box, creating unique artistry and enabling participants to learn and practice their skills. The public response to this installation was phenomenal – many people travelled long distances specifically to see the artists at work and to have the opportunity to participate. Graffiti Legends (Live Art/Visual Art): two of the world’s foremost graffiti pioneers and contemporary artists Duro Cia and Tracy 168 made an extremely rare trip to the UK to team up with some of Europe’s finest crews and Brighton’s top artist for a two-day production on the New England Quarter site to create a mammoth design stretching over 100ft long. The New York icons were joined by artists from Spain, Germany, Holland, Italy, USA and the UK for a truly unique international collaboration. Both projects were hugely successful with a high number of participants and contributors from all around the world as well as locally. All of the work has been recorded and archived, and as a legacy, the Frieze Box project will be touring to the South West region this year as part of strategically significant outdoor festival in St Ives. In addition to a leading role on these projects, Kala Phool are also supporting a range of fledgling artists and organisations by providing an umbrella service in order to assist them to develop and produce their events with the aid of practical advice and guidance in production management, governance and good practice. KP continues to push the boundaries of underrepresented artforms, and the organisation’s international collaborations and strategic projects, will also help to extend the networks and capacity of these new groups and promote the development of their skills and confidence to be able to manage fully independently in the future.
