Photos by Maura BadoniWorking in conjunction with Brighton Carnival, Brighton Peace Messenger (Peace Picnic) agreed to share some resources and re-arranged their separate events to coincide on the same day on Hove Lawns. The result was an overwhelming success that far exceeded the anticipated audiences of 5,000 - 10,000. The Health & Safety Officer recorded an estimated peak crowd of over 20,000 people and an overall footfall of 35,000 people. The Redemption Song Programme supported two specific aspects of the Peace Picnic: Peace of Art a live art installation and This Beautiful World youth and community stage. Both of these projects created opportunities for members of the general public to be involved in diverse art forms whilst raising awareness on the over-arching theme of civil liberty.

Peace of Art (Live Art) – enabled members of the public to participate in the creation of a huge representation of the word Freedom with their bodies. A designer pre-marked the word in a large formation on Hove lawns and visitors to the Peace Picnic were then invited to take up position inside the each of the letters for an aerial photograph. Whilst waiting for the helicopter to fly overhead, vocal director Juliet Russell taught the crowd the lyrics to Bob Marley’s Redemption Song, which culminated in a mass choir performance on stage as well as the audience all singing together. This was an extremely popular activity with many people expressing how moving they found the whole experience. The live art was a particular effective and enjoyable way of encouraging disparate groups and individuals to work together for a common purpose, stimulating community cohesion and an appreciation of the many different ways of expressing art.

This Beautiful World Youth & Community Stage - as part of the Community Programme, local aspiring musicians and performers were given a unique chance to have their own programmed stage and participate in a free, fun, family event. Approximately 70 performers took to the stage throughout the afternoon, performing to a very enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. This rare opportunity to present their material live on stage to such a huge audience whilst contributing to a positive initiative was a huge boost to the confidence of the artists. The organisers also gained invaluable experience of operating within a large-scale event and working in collaboration with a wide range of partners.
