Half-Term Creative Workshops

Photos by Stella East and Jenni Lewin-TurnerThis series of activities was added to the programme as a direct response to feedback from artists, parents and young people who expressed a desire for creative workshops, particularly after the History of Hair Show. The host venue, Jubilee Library, were also keen to see the space used creatively and attract diverse visitors, so the following timetable of workshops and performances was devised to coincide with the school spring half-term break:
Ganeesh Elephant (Storytelling, Crafts)
UnPacked Theatre (Physical Theatre)
Express Yourself! (Songwriting, Poetry and Rap)
Anansi - Caribbean Folklore (Drama, Puppetry)
Banner Making (Arts, Crafts)
Little Wing - Queen of the Dragons (Storytelling, Crafts)
Creative and Life Writing
Story Magic with Jane Grell (Storytelling, Poetry)
Anansi and Multilingual Month (Performance)
Horrid Henry (Storytelling with Sid Sloane)
Bridgetown to Brighton Exposed (Artists' Talk)

The Workshop Programme developed organically and in response to specific requests. The workshops were an overwhelming success, with many of them heavily oversubscribed. Community groups were specifically targeted as priorities for the free places but details were also subsequently circulated to the wider public via schools and family-oriented organisations.

Parents and children alike enjoyed the sessions and many of them expressed a desire for similar events in the future. This feedback led to the additional booking of popular children’s TV presenter Sid Sloane from Cbeebies to re-enact Horrid Henry stories in another highly successful Saturday morning storytelling session at Jubilee Library attended by over 80 young children and their parents.
